The Artists at the Reston Art Gallery & Studios:

Kathy Kautter

About the Artist

Kathy is currently showing her art at the Reston Art Gallery, Reston, VA. As one of the original members of the League of Reston Artists in its early years, and serving as President in 1986, she is currently involved in the organization as Treasurer and a Board Member. She was also a founder of the Herndon Old Town Gallery in Herndon, VA in 1984, and remained with them for 4 years.

Kathy has taken art classes from various local artists include Angie Culfogenis, Lassie Corbett, and Cathy Wilkins at Northern Virginia Community College. She holds a BA in Political Science from Wilkes University and a Masters degree in Urban and Regional Planning from George Washington University. She has been involved in many volunteer organizations, and is currently serving as President of the Summerwood Civic Association.

She was involved with the first ever Art Event at Jimmy’s Old Town Tavern in April of 2007, a one day art show that highlighted local artists. A percentage of proceeds from that event went to the Herndon Council of the Arts. She planned a fabulous repeat of this show in Spring of 2008! She is currently working with the League of Reston Artists Scholarship Committee to provide scholarships to high school seniors in Fairfax County who will major in art in college.

Artist’s Statement

"I am fascinated by colors and light in nature – anything from soft blues and verdant greens to vibrant reds and yellows. Evan an overcast day in winter has its own beauty in the colors I see – gray is never just gray – it is blue and violet and silver. I try to capture those colors I see in nature.

I love clouds – they are ethereal, ever-changing, and yet, each cloud formation has its own personality. Painting clouds is a passion. Whether it is a soft spring day, a stormy and heavy sky, or a brilliant sun-filled sky, clouds are there to reflect what is around them. That is what I try to capture.

Experimentation in various styles of expression is something I enjoy. I do not want to limit myself in one medium, or focus on a limited subject matter. I believe that to grow as an artist, I must be willing to try new things and to see what fits best for the way I want to express myself in art. I work mostly in acrylics, but also use various mediums such as watercolor, colored pencils, and pastels. I have begun some experimentation in photography as well. The overriding theme of what is important to me in my interpretation of what I see – my impression of color, form and light."
