The Artists at the Reston Art Gallery & Studios:

Claudia Samper

About the Artist

A painting is a story about to be told, an illusion on a piece of canvas.

In my paintings I push this theatrical representation through the use of color and composition. After all, we cannot reproduce "reality" but what it means to us.

The human figure is the subject with which I relate to since I began painting. I am fascinated about the mysteriousness of the human being, the complexity of human nature. I am in a constant search for the energy I receive from a person in any given situation.

As viewers we look at a painting and react. We could empathize with a situation that feels too familiar, a deja-vu, a story already told. But we could also wonder about a story that hasn't been told yet.

I look for this interaction; only our unique perception of this "reality" is capable of triggering a feeling, a thought or a wonder. Through my paintings I unveil that complexity, depicting a moment in a relationship, a gesture in a portrait.

The painting confronts us and at the same time helps us articulate this illusion on the canvas.

Claudia Samper holds a Degree in Architecture from the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. She also studied graphic design, photography and ceramics. After being involved in the design field for several years, her interest went beyond that into fine arts focusing on figure and portrait painting.

She has always been fascinated about the mysteriousness of the human being and the complexity of human nature. Color and composition are key elements in her paintings; they give life to her characters and help unfold the narrative of her work. Through her paintings Claudia unveils that human complexity depicting a moment in time.

Viewers look at a painting and react. They could empathize with a situation that feels too familiar, a deja-vu, a story already told. But they could also wonder about a story that hasn’t been told yet. Claudia looks for this interaction, each viewer's unique perception of this “reality” is capable of triggering a unique feeling, thought or wonder.

Her commissioned works can be found in private collections in Spain, Argentina, and the United States.
